Demo Reel Refresh
Your reel is an argument for your skills, and every shot should be evidence. Most reels don’t need more work. They need clearer evidence.
Over eight lessons you take the reel you already have and rebuild it around one target role, without starting a new project. You will:
- audit every piece
- make the fixes that matter most
- cut a sharper edit
- add honest credits and breakdowns
- test the result with real viewers before you send it
Every lesson asks the same question: if someone watched your reel with no introduction, would they know what job you want and why you can do it? By the end you can answer yes.
The course is built on how reels are actually reviewed. Recruiters and supervisors often watch only the first shots, sometimes with the sound off, and judge quickly. It is designed for VFX, animation, games and technical art students, graduates and working artists whose skills have outgrown their reels. Any discipline and any software is welcome.
Lesson 01: What Your Reel Says Now
- How recruiters and supervisors actually watch a reel
- The first-shot, sound-off test
- Choose one target role, and write the one sentence your reel must prove
- Exercise: a cold review of your current reel against your target role
Lesson 02: The Audit: Keep, Improve, Remove
- Label every piece as Keep, Improve or Remove
- Why weak work lowers the value of strong work beside it
- Removing work you are proud of, and why it is often the hardest step
- Exercise: a completed audit sheet with the skill each piece shows
Lesson 03: The One Fix That Matters Most
- Find the single change that improves the reel the most
- Fix, finish or reframe existing work instead of starting something new
- Compare before and after, and judge the improvement honestly
- Exercise: one focused fix, shown side by side with the original
Lesson 04: Structure and the Edit
- Lead with your strongest, most relevant work
- Length, order, pacing and the case for a shorter reel
- Music, sound and cuts that support the work instead of competing with it
- Exercise: a first cut of the refreshed reel
Lesson 05: Credit and Clarity
- Title card, contact details and on-screen labels that read at a glance
- Shot lists that state exactly what you did
- Group projects and studio work: credit your contribution precisely, and only with permission to show it
- Exercise: a labelled cut with an accurate shot list and credits
Lesson 06: Breakdowns That Prove the Work
- Show the process: plates, passes, wireframes, before and after
- Choose which shots deserve a breakdown
- Disclose tools honestly, including any AI assistance
- Exercise: one shot breakdown for your strongest piece
Lesson 07: Feedback and Final Changes
- Run a feedback session that gets useful answers, not compliments
- Separate notes you should act on from notes you can set aside
- Make final changes without restarting the edit
- Exercise: two feedback sessions, with a change log of what you acted on and why
Lesson 08: Export, Publish and Maintain
- Export settings that keep the work sharp on common platforms
- Upload, test the link, and present the reel on your portfolio site and profiles
- Keep the reel current: a short review every few months and after every strong new piece
- Exercise: a published reel, a working link and a personal maintenance plan
What you leave with
- A refreshed, focused reel built around one target role
- An accurate shot list, credits and at least one breakdown
- A repeatable audit method for every future update
