STORYcraft – Live
Every image tells a story, whether the artist intends it or not. STORYcraft teaches you to make that story deliberate.
Over eight lessons you learn the visual language that lets a still frame, a character, a camera or a world say something a viewer understands without a word of explanation. Each lesson follows the same rhythm: Learn, Practice, Build, Refine, and Masterpiece. Every lesson ends with one finished piece for your Foundation Portfolio.
The course is driven by the Blind Read. A viewer who knows nothing about your intent describes what they see, and you find out whether your image says what you meant. Six ideas run through every lesson and grow as the course builds:
- Intent
- Focus
- Contrast
- Emotion
- Meaning
- Readability
STORYcraft is the foundation of the CG-EH Craft Ecosystem and is open to every digital creator. No prior software experience is required: you can work with paintovers, photographs, simple blockouts, or any tool you already use.
Lesson 01: Story, Every Image Tells a Story
- Why stories work: beats, conflict, curiosity and stakes
- A still frame as the smallest unit of narrative
- Read images the way a director reads a script
- Masterpiece: a single image that tells a clear story a stranger can describe
Lesson 02: Character, Designing Someone Worth Following
- Design serves motivation, not the reverse
- Shape language, silhouette and costume as story
- Showing what a character wants, and what stands in the way
- Masterpiece: a character whose design tells a viewer who they are and what they want
Lesson 03: Composition, Guiding the Eye
- The frame decides what the eye sees first
- Focal points, leading lines, balance, scale and visual hierarchy
- Contrast as the tool that creates focus
- Masterpiece: a composition that leads the eye to the story in a deliberate order
Lesson 04: Light and Colour, Painting with Emotion
- Light and colour carry emotion before content
- Value structure, key and fill, temperature and colour harmony
- Shift the mood of the same scene with light alone
- Masterpiece: one scene lit for a specific emotion a viewer can name
Lesson 05: Camera, Choosing the Audience’s Eyes
- The camera is where the audience stands
- Shot size, angle, lens and height as a relationship to the subject
- Making a subject read as powerful, vulnerable or neutral through the camera alone
- Masterpiece: a shot whose camera choice states the audience’s relationship to the subject without a word
Lesson 06: Environment, Worlds That Tell Stories
- A setting is a character with a history
- Environmental storytelling, implied history and lived-in detail
- What a space says about who was just here and what they were doing
- Masterpiece: an environment with no figure in it that still tells a clear story through its details alone
Lesson 07: Motion and Timing, Bringing Stories to Life
- Timing turns a frame into a beat
- Sequence, pacing, the hold and the moment
- How the order and duration of images change their meaning
- Masterpiece: a short sequence whose timing lands one clear story beat
Lesson 08: Theme, Why Stories Matter
- What a story is about beneath what happens
- Theme, symbol, subtext and coherence around one controlling idea
- Bringing all eight crafts together in a single piece
- Masterpiece: a complete piece in which every craft choice serves one idea a viewer can name unprompted
What you leave with
- A Foundation Portfolio of eight finished pieces, one per lesson
- A shared critical vocabulary for reading and discussing images
- A tested habit of checking your intent against what viewers actually see
- The foundation for every other Craft in the CG-EH Ecosystem
