Fire, smoke, water, sparks and debris are some of the hardest things to make believable. The eye has seen them all its life and knows instantly when something is wrong. FXcraft teaches you to watch real phenomena like an FX artist, understand the forces behind them, and build effects that read at the right size, move with intent and sit convincingly in a shot.
Over eight lessons you work in a set order:
- watch real events frame by frame
- name the forces that move them
- build clean simulations in Houdini
- design where effects begin
- shape smoke, fire and fluids
- make effects read at their true size
- art-direct motion for a shot
- light, render and place a finished effect in a scene
Every simulation is measured against real reference. Your studies build into an FX reel across the course.
Each lesson follows the same rhythm: Learn, Practice, Build, Refine and Masterpiece. Every lesson ends with a peer read, such as the phenomenon read, the force read, the stress read, the first-second read or the scale read. Classmates judge your effect from its motion alone, before you reveal what it was meant to be.
The course asks one question of every effect: does it behave like the real thing at its true size, and does it serve the shot?
FXcraft is open to artists new to effects. No prior Houdini experience is required. You work in Houdini, using the free Houdini Apprentice, and Unreal Engine with Niagara. All fire and explosion reference comes from existing footage, never from filming it yourself.
Lesson 01: Observation, Watch Before You Simulate
- Breaking any phenomenon into energy source, propagation and dissipation
- Timing beats in the life of an effect, frame by frame
- The scale cues that tell the eye how big an effect is
- How the same effect tells a different story with different timing and scale
- Masterpiece: a reference atlas of real phenomena, analyzed frame by frame
Lesson 02: Forces, Same Dots, Different Materials
- Gravity, drag, wind and turbulence
- How mass and surface area decide an effect’s character
- Building a Houdini particle network and naming the force behind each node
- Masterpiece: Four Force Studies of leaves, dust, sparks and debris, each with reference, a force diagram and a labelled network
Lesson 03: Simulation, Step by Step
- Solvers, substeps and how simulations advance through time
- Procedural setups built from rules, not placements
- Setups that survive changes to their inputs
- Masterpiece: a Procedural Impact Setup that holds up when its inputs change
Lesson 04: Sourcing, Where Effects Begin
- Source attributes: density, temperature, fuel and velocity
- Animating a source with noise, pulses and bursts instead of constant emission
- Building a Niagara emitter with designed spawn rules
- Masterpiece: designed fire sources in Houdini and a Niagara emitter whose first second predicts the whole effect
Lesson 05: Form and Volume, Shaping Smoke and Fire
- How smoke, fire and fluids form shapes as they move
- Controlling shape and dissipation
- Keeping volume readable instead of uniform
- Masterpiece: a small fire and smoke effect with controlled shape and dissipation, matched to reference
Lesson 06: Scale and Detail, True Size
- Building in real-world units, and why solvers depend on scale
- Why large effects move slowly, and how to time an effect to its size
- Sizing detail and resolution for what the camera sees
- Masterpiece: One Effect, Three Sizes, a smoke and fire effect at candle, campfire and building size, each reading true
Lesson 07: Art Direction, Motion for the Shot
- Designing an effect for a specific shot and story
- Timing, composition and readability on screen
- Directing a simulation toward an intended look, not just accepting the result
- Masterpiece: an effect redesigned to serve a shot brief, with before and after
Lesson 08: Integration, Into the Scene
- Lighting and rendering effects so they belong in a scene
- Placing effects in film-style and real-time shots
- Breakdowns from reference to final, and a live defence of your decisions
- Masterpiece: an integrated FX shot with breakdowns and cold-read records, presented and defended in critique
What you leave with
- An FX reel of studies and an integrated final shot, each matched to reference
- A trained eye for real-world motion, force and scale
- A working method in Houdini and Niagara that transfers to any FX pipeline
- The foundation for the Craftsman tier and the rest of the CG-EH Craft Ecosystem
