Light decides what an audience can see, where they look and how they feel. The same room can read as a sanctuary or a threat, and the same face as trustworthy or sinister, through light alone. LIGHTcraft teaches you to see light, understand it, and place it on purpose.
Over eight lessons you build two things together:
- a trained eye, through daily observation and frame reading from film and photography, including shows such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Meg and Ender’s Game
- a technical foundation, in the physics of light, colour, exposure and rendering
The course ends with a showcase of an interior and an exterior, each lit for day and night, with breakdowns that show every decision.
Each lesson follows the same rhythm: Learn, Practice, Build, Refine and Masterpiece. Every lesson ends with a peer read, such as the cold light read or the variable read. Viewers who haven’t heard your intent say what they see and feel before you explain what you meant. Every light in your scenes has to be motivated: if you can’t say where it comes from and why it’s there, it doesn’t belong.
The course asks one question of every image: does the light tell the audience where to look and how to feel, and can you prove it?
LIGHTcraft is open to beginners and to artists moving into lighting. No prior lighting experience is required. You work in Unreal Engine 5 and Maya with Arnold. The judgment you build carries across any renderer.
Lesson 01: Seeing Like a Lighting Artist
- Reading light in film stills and photographs: direction, quality, colour and contrast
- Finding the evidence in shadows, catchlights and falloff
- Building a daily observation habit with a camera and a notebook
- Masterpiece: a lighting analysis of film stills and your own photographs, read cold and then checked against the evidence
Lesson 02: The Science of Light, Change One Thing
- Intensity, falloff, shadow, source size and diffusion
- How each variable changes the look of a scene
- Testing one change at a time so you know exactly what caused each result
- Masterpiece: a set of Lighting Experiments, each isolating a single variable
Lesson 03: Colour and Temperature, Colour Is a Decision
- White balance and colour temperature
- Mixed sources and the stories warm and cool light tell together
- Colour as mood, and keeping it consistent across a scene
- Masterpiece: one scene lit in contrasting colour schemes, each with a stated mood
Lesson 04: Composition Through Light, Lead the Eye
- Using contrast, silhouette and value to direct attention
- Separating foreground, middle ground and background with light
- Revealing and hiding information on purpose
- Masterpiece: a lit composition that leads the eye in a deliberate order, verified by cold viewers
Lesson 05: Cameras and Exposure, From Light to Image
- Exposure, dynamic range and tone mapping
- How cameras and renderers turn light into an image
- Rendering in Unreal Engine and Arnold, and comparing the results honestly
- Masterpiece: a correctly exposed render of the same scene in both renderers, with a short comparison
Lesson 06: Interior Lighting, Light That Lives in a Room
- Window light, practicals and bounce
- Making a room feel inhabited through motivated light
- Day and night versions of the same interior
- Masterpiece: an interior lit for day and night, with every light motivated
Lesson 07: Exterior Lighting, Sun, Sky and Night
- Sun and sky as a single system
- Time of day, weather and atmosphere
- Night exteriors that read without simply darkening a day image
- Masterpiece: an exterior lit for day and night, each with its own lighting design
Lesson 08: Apprentice Showcase, Day and Night
- Bringing observation, science, colour, composition and exposure together
- Breakdowns that show each light and why it is there
- Mood statements, cold reads and a live defence of your decisions
- Masterpiece: an interior and an exterior, each lit for day and night, with breakdowns, presented and defended in critique
What you leave with
- A finished showcase of four lit images with full lighting breakdowns
- A trained eye for reading light in any frame, film or photograph
- A working method in Unreal Engine and Arnold that transfers to any renderer
- The foundation for the Craftsman tier and the rest of the CG-EH Craft Ecosystem
