Technical Artists don’t just solve today’s problem; they build systems that keep solving it. One good tool can save a hundred artist-hours, and one good pipeline can save a production. TECHcraft teaches you to think like a Technical Artist: find the friction in how a team works, choose the problems worth solving, and build tools other people can rely on.
Over eight lessons you move from seeing problems to solving them:
- auditing a real workflow
- building interactive systems with Blueprints in Unreal Engine
- organizing data so systems can grow
- thinking procedurally
- writing your first Python scripts
- automating one real repetitive task in Maya
The opportunity you identify in Lesson 01 can become the utility you build in Lesson 07 and demonstrate live in the Showcase.
Each lesson follows the same rhythm: Learn, Practice, Build, Refine and Masterpiece. Every lesson ends with a peer read, such as the map walk or the graph read. A classmate reads your work cold, before you explain it, and finds where it breaks.
The course judges every project on four things:
- Reliability: it works across varied inputs and fails gracefully
- Craft: clean graphs and code, sensible naming, good performance
- Reusability: it solves a class of problems, not one case
- Professionalism: documentation, presentation and delivery
TECHcraft is open to artists with no programming experience. You should be comfortable in Unreal Engine and at least one 3D package (Maya recommended). Curiosity about how things work matters more than prior scripting.
Lesson 01: Thinking Like a Technical Artist, Find the Friction
- What Technical Artists do, and why they are valued as force multipliers
- Mapping a production workflow: steps, tools, data, people and handoffs
- Tracing a symptom to its root cause before proposing a solution
- Weighing the value of a tool against the effort to build and maintain it
- Masterpiece: a Workflow Audit, with a workflow map and automation opportunities ranked by impact against effort
Lesson 02: Blueprint Fundamentals, Predict, Then Play
- Visual scripting in Unreal Engine: variables, functions and events
- Branches and conditions that make a system respond
- Predicting what a graph will do before you run it
- Masterpiece: a Conditional Door, an interactive Blueprint that responds correctly to the rules you set
Lesson 03: Interaction and Communication, Systems That Talk
- Components, and building actors from reusable parts
- How Blueprints communicate: references, events and interfaces
- Keeping systems loosely connected so they don’t break together
- Masterpiece: a set of actors that communicate to complete an interactive sequence
Lesson 04: Data, Separate the Data From the Logic
- Arrays, structs and enums
- Data Tables that let artists change a system without touching its logic
- Naming and organization as data that tools depend on
- Masterpiece: a data-driven system controlled entirely from a Data Table
Lesson 05: Procedural Thinking, Rules, Not Placements
- Thinking in rules, parameters and variation instead of one-off placements
- Randomization with control: seeds, ranges and constraints
- Modular systems that scale
- Masterpiece: a procedural system that builds varied, art-directable results from a small set of rules
Lesson 06: Python Fundamentals, First Scripts
- Variables, loops, conditions and functions
- Reading errors, and debugging step by step
- Writing scripts that other people can read
- Masterpiece: a set of small, documented Python scripts that each solve one clear task
Lesson 07: Maya Automation, Solve One Real Problem
- Scripting Maya with Python
- Building a simple interface artists can use without reading the code
- Confirmation, undo and safe failure, plus measuring the time saved
- Masterpiece: a Maya utility that automates one real repetitive task, with a measured result
Lesson 08: Apprentice Showcase, Demonstrated Live
- Bringing the Blueprint prototype, data-driven tool and Python script together
- Documentation another artist can follow without you present
- Live demonstration, measured results and a defence of your decisions
- Masterpiece: a portfolio-ready Showcase of a prototype, tool and script, demonstrated live and defended in critique
What you leave with
- A working Blueprint prototype, a data-driven tool and a Maya utility, each documented
- A method for finding, ranking and solving production problems
- The habits of reliability, reusability and documentation that studios hire for
- The foundation for the Craftsman tier and the rest of the CG-EH Craft Ecosystem
