Every world an audience visits is built from assets. A beautiful prop that’s the wrong scale, has broken topology or can’t be opened by the next artist is not finished. ASSETcraft teaches you to build assets that look right, are built right and work for someone else.
Over eight lessons you carry one hero prop from reference to a portfolio-ready presentation. Each lesson moves it one production stage forward:
- reference
- blockout
- clean geometry
- UVs
- sculpted detail
- bakes and textures
- an engine-ready package
- final presentation
Each lesson follows the same rhythm: Learn, Practice, Build, Refine, and Masterpiece. Every lesson ends with a peer read of the work, such as a board read, a checker read or a material read. Viewers point out what isn’t working before you’re told what you intended.
The course asks one question of every asset: is it believable, is it built correctly, and could a production team actually use it?
ASSETcraft is open to beginners and to modellers moving from tutorials to production standards. No prior 3D experience is required. Work in Blender or Maya, with Substance 3D Painter for texturing and a real-time engine for presentation.
Lesson 01: Reference and Intent, Look Before You Model
- Why every strong asset starts with observation, not software
- Building a reference board: form, scale, materials, wear and function
- Writing an asset brief, and a short history that explains how the object was made and used
- Masterpiece: a reference package and brief for your hero prop
Lesson 02: Form and Blockout, Get the Big Shapes Right
- Proportion, silhouette and scale before any detail
- Working in real-world units from the brief
- Primary, secondary and tertiary forms
- Masterpiece: a scaled blockout of the hero prop that reads correctly from every angle
Lesson 03: Topology, Build It Clean
- Edge flow, quads, supporting loops and hard edges
- Topology that serves deformation, subdivision, baking and the polygon budget
- Checking surface quality under a reflective material
- Masterpiece: production geometry for the hero prop with a clean wireframe presentation
Lesson 04: UVs and Layout, Give Every Map an Address
- Seams, shells, stretching and texel density
- Hiding seams along hard edges and where the camera doesn’t look
- Packing efficiently with enough padding for baking
- Masterpiece: a UV layout at a stated texel density, verified with checker renders
Lesson 05: Sculpting and Detail, Detail That Tells the Story
- High-poly sculpting for wear, damage and surface form
- Deciding which details live in geometry, the normal map or the texture
- Placing wear where use and the environment would cause it
- Masterpiece: a high-poly sculpt with a wear map that labels the cause of every mark
Lesson 06: Baking and Texturing, Materials Behave
- Clean bakes: cages, hard edges, naming and matching tangent space
- PBR materials built in layers: base, manufacture, use and environment
- Checking that materials hold up under any light, not just one
- Masterpiece: the hero prop baked and textured, rendered under two lighting setups
Lesson 07: Optimization and Pipeline, It Works for Someone Else
- Correct scale, pivots, naming, LODs and collision
- Export settings, folder structure and a clear read-me
- Testing the package the way the next artist will open it
- Masterpiece: an engine-ready asset package that imports cleanly without asking the maker anything
Lesson 08: Presentation, Show the Work Honestly
- Studio lighting that shows form and materials at their best, honestly
- Turntables, beauty renders, close-ups and reference comparisons
- Wireframe, UV and texture breakdowns as evidence of craft
- Masterpiece: a portfolio-ready presentation of the hero prop, defended in critique
What you leave with
- One fully documented hero prop, from reference to portfolio
- A production habit at every stage, from scale and topology to naming and handoff
- A presentation standard you can repeat for every asset you build
- The foundation for Worldcraft and the rest of the CG-EH Craft Ecosystem
